Beard Styles Without a Mustache: Compare the Coverage

Keeping the upper lip clear does not commit you to one beard shape. You can keep a small patch below the lip, a chin-focused beard, a narrow jaw outline, or much broader coverage. Start by choosing where you want hair to remain.

Goatee

Keep: One small patch immediately below the lower lip.

Clear: The upper lip, the rest of the chin, cheeks, and jaw stay clear.

Chin Strap

Original coverage schematic: a narrow continuous jaw outline from one sideburn to the other.

Keep: A narrow continuous strip from one sideburn along the jaw, beneath the chin, to the other sideburn.

Clear: The upper lip, cheeks above the strip, soul-patch area, and neck below the strip stay clear.

Dutch Beard

Mutton Chops

Gillette also describes the Chin Strap as a style without a mustache. Our preview uses the narrower, continuous jaw strip described above; that does not mean every image carrying the same name has identical proportions.

Choose Coverage Before Choosing Length

For a small central accent, compare Soul Patch with Goatee. The difference is how much of the chin remains covered, not simply how short the hair is.

For a jaw outline, compare Chin Strap with the broader Dutch Beard. A narrow strip leaves more skin visible, but it also makes breaks in the intended line easier to notice. A preview cannot make disconnected natural growth continuous.

For hair concentrated at the sides, compare Mutton Chops with the other shapes. Keeping the center chin clear is a major part of this option. Check both sides instead of judging the whole shape from one angle.

Similar Names That Include a Mustache

BeardStyles’ Circle Beard connects the mustache to the chin through the mouth corners. It differs from the upper-lip-free Goatee described here.

Friendly Mutton Chops adds a mustache connecting the two sides; ordinary Mutton Chops in our preview keeps that area clear. Beardstache makes the mustache the dominant feature. Chevron is a mustache style. None belongs in this upper-lip-free comparison.

These distinctions describe existing options. Selecting a Full Beard preview does not provide a separate “remove the mustache” control.

Does no mustache mean less maintenance? There is still an upper-lip border to maintain, along with the other edges of the chosen shape. The amount of work depends on growth and the finish you want.

Is a Goatee always mustache-free? The name is used differently across guides. The BeardStyles Goatee preview keeps the upper lip clear; Circle Beard includes a connected mustache.

Can I remove a mustache from any preview? There is no separate control for that in the current style selector. Choose an existing option whose definition already keeps the upper lip clear.
