SEASONAL NOTES · MOVEMBER
Movember with a beard? Start with the rules.
Before November 1, check the clean-shave tradition, what Movember’s official FAQ says about beards, and the mustache outlines you can compare.

In this guideThe clean start
The useful question is not simply “Which mustache looks best?” First decide whether you want the traditional Grow a Mo challenge or another way to take part. That choice changes what a clean start means for your beard.
For Grow a Mo, start November 1 clean-shaven.
Movember’s current Grow page asks participants to start clean-shaven, then grow a mustache. Its September 30, 2026 campaign article repeats November 1 as the starting point. An existing beard or mustache is not the traditional starting look for that challenge.
Separate preparation from prediction. You can choose a direction and take a reference photo beforehand, but you cannot know from a calendar how much coverage you will have by November 30.
A traditional Mo and supporting Movember are different questions.
The official FAQ describes a traditional mustache as ideally not connecting upward into sideburns or downward across the chin. It also welcomes people who prefer other facial hair, and explicitly allows a small patch below the lower lip. That is more nuanced than treating every beard wearer as unable to participate.
If you want the traditional mustache-focused look, keep its outline distinct from a beard or goatee. If keeping your beard matters more, read the organizer’s other participation options. Do not assume an AI style name settles the campaign rules.
For a workplace or local competition, check its own terms as well. This guide explains the organizer’s published material; it does not decide a separate competition’s eligibility.
Compare what stays, not just the style name.
These are existing BeardStyles options for comparing coverage. They are not an official Movember style shortlist, and none promises that your growth will reach the illustrated shape within a month.
Chevron · a clear upper-lip focus

A broad mustache follows the upper lip, with outer edges sloping gently downward. Cheeks and chin stay clear. Compare this outline if you want the mustache itself to carry the look, then judge the width your own coverage supports.
Read the Chevron guideHorseshoe · two separate side columns

The mustache continues beside the mouth in two vertical columns, while the middle of the chin stays clear. Look at the gaps and lower endpoints as well as the upper lip. This is not a connected chin beard, and a fixed growth deadline does not guarantee complete columns.

A stronger mustache sits over much lighter cheek, jaw and chin stubble. It can be a useful personal-style comparison, but it does not show the clean surrounding face of the traditional Mo look. Keep that distinction clear when choosing how to participate.
Read the Beardstache guideUse a preview to choose a direction before a big change.
Use a clear front-facing photo in even light. Compare two plausible outlines with the same photo, checking the upper lip, mouth corners, cheeks and chin separately. A close-up style illustration and a generated preview serve different purposes: one explains the preset, the other helps you compare a broad appearance.
Before trimming, comb the hair into its usual position and follow the instructions for your own tool and attachment. Keep the hair needed for your chosen outline. Do not copy an exact cutting line from an illustration or use another person’s guard number as a universal setting.
A preview cannot predict growth speed, density or a November 30 result. Decide from your actual coverage as it develops.
Three questions worth settling before you start.
What if the mustache stays light or uneven?
Do not treat an illustration as a minimum result you must reach. The official FAQ recognizes variation between mustaches. Compare the coverage you have rather than promising to fill every gap by a certain date.
Can the preview show my end-of-month growth?
No. It generates an appearance from your photo and selected preset. It is not a biological growth forecast or an official record of participation.
Does everyone supporting Movember need to shave?
The clean-start guidance belongs to growing a Mo. The organizer also lists other ways to get involved, including movement challenges and hosting. Read the option you actually choose rather than applying a grooming rule to every supporter.
Read the organizer before choosing your outline.
