Before or after the shower? Let your beard dry first.
Choose a practical shower-and-trim order, check that your beard is ready, and keep length trimming separate from shaving your contours.

In this guideThe short answer
For reducing beard length, aim for clean, fully dry hair that sits in its usual direction. You can trim before a shower if your beard is already clean, or wash first and wait until it dries. The useful question is whether your beard is ready for a trim, rather than whether the shower must always come first.
Different routines share the same dry-hair check.
Gillette’s US guide places trimming after a shower, once the beard is fully dry. AOK’s grooming guide puts a dry trim before washing. These are different ways to reach a similar starting point: judge the length with the beard dry, rather than immediately after wetting it.
All About BEARDS also advises against trimming wet facial hair because the result can look shorter when it dries. That is useful preparation advice, not a promise that every beard changes by a fixed amount.
Choose the route that fits the beard you have now.
Use these two editorial routines as starting points. Neither calls for an extra wash when your beard is already clean.
Already clean and dry · Trim, then shower
Gently arrange the hair in its everyday direction and make a conservative trim. Shower afterwards if that suits your routine, then let the beard dry before judging the finished outline. This order is convenient when you want to wash away loose clippings. It is not a reason to trim through dirt or heavy product buildup.
Needs washing · Wash, dry, then trim
Wash and rinse first, gently pat with a clean towel, and allow the beard to dry fully. Comb out tangles without pulling the hairs straight. Judge the settled shape, then trim. If you have no time to let it dry, leave the length adjustment for later rather than cutting a damp beard in a hurry.
A towel is a step, not a drying deadline.
Patting with a towel does not automatically mean every part of a fuller beard is dry. Check the hair beneath the chin as well as the outer surface, and let it settle into the way you normally wear it. There is no drying time in minutes that works for every length and texture.
Once ready, begin with a longer guard than your target and inspect a small area before shortening further. Record the actual setting for your tool; a guard number is not a universal length. Our length guide explains that distinction.

Keeping length and shaving skin are separate jobs.
A guarded trimmer leaves hair behind. A manual razor used to clean up exposed skin around a beard has a different job and preparation routine. AOK separates dry length trimming from wet contour shaving after a shower; advice for the razor does not automatically describe how to trim the beard itself.
Decide which area you want to retain before cleaning up the surrounding skin. For choosing the boundary, use the neckline guide rather than moving the line each time you change your shower order.

Before you pick up the trimmer.
Does a waterproof trimmer change the answer?
Water-use permission depends on the exact model and attachment. Philips’ guide says to follow the user manual. A waterproof claim alone does not tell you how the finished beard will look when dry; judge retained length in its usual dry shape.
I already trimmed it damp. Should I fix it immediately?
Let it dry and settle before deciding anything else. Check the whole outline, rather than repeatedly shortening one side to match the other while the hair is still changing position. If you are unsure, stop and take a clear reference photo for a barber.
Should I inspect the result before or after styling?
For a useful comparison, check it dry and arranged as you normally wear it. If you take reference photos, keep the angle and lighting similar. That is our practical comparison method, not a guarantee of a particular cut or growth result.
